Renaissance of 3D
What is probably obvious to the majority of you, the 3D scene is back after a few recrudescences of the past. Starting from this year, but especially in the following 1-2 years, it seems that 3D may become a true revolution, not some dead-end experiment, like before.
Polarized 3D, shutter technology 3D, 3D TVs that do not require the viewer to wear special glasses. The infrastructure seems to build itself up.
The catalyst seems to be James Cameron's Avatar coming out in December of 2009. Or to be more precise, it seems to be a milestone up ahead. Why? Partly because of this beauty:
The tool that will upgrade the 3D experience. To summarize: active convergence, the two objective lenses can move separately, a bit similar to our eyes, they can follow an object as they come closer or go far from the camera, by changing their angle relative to each other. They can also change their relative distance to each other, a feature our eyes normally can't do.
Avatar won't be the first to use this camera system though (U23D used it for example, or Journey to the Centre of the Earth 3D was shot with it). But this camera won't be the only revolutionary thing in Avatar either.
Principal photography has wrapped in the last few days in New Zealand. Let's do the math, that gives almost 2 years for post production. That should give you a hint: they promise photo realistic CGI, with a new motion capture system, and virtual sets and creatures visible on set for the director. As this has less to do with 3D, it will surely add a dimension (pun IS intended) to the movie.
To sum it up, let's quote Mr. James Cameron himself from a recent interview about Avatar.

(James Cameron) “I can’t think of a better movie for 3-D - action, creatures, big aerial battles and more. It’s going to rock the house. It’s another world - a world of great beauty and savagery, a mystical place where humans, with their greed and technology, confront a virgin world of great danger and wonder. When the humans try to take what’s not theirs, as they have done since the dawn of time whenever they inhabit a new land, the land fights back. And the fight is on; the scale is off the chain. And that’s all I am saying.”
Will Avatar be the next Titanic or Aliens? Sure could be. Will it be the first really wow 3D full length feature film? A long road till the end of 2009 with many promising titles along the way. I say 3D won't be such a curiosity by that time, but the whole package with the CGI and story could hit, and it could hit HARD. Hopefully the pointing at the camera and sticking in your face scenes will go quiet by then, and good movies that are in 3D will replace "good god, it's 3D!" movies.

Good thing is they'll be alien creatures, so you have no real life comparison.
There is a new rumor, that they will postpone the premier to mid 2010. This is just a rumor, but some articles state a 2010 release. I hope they're wrong, it would be a bit ridiculous, plus a December release is much better for Oscar chances.
