First set of Cannes reports
May 16th 2008 15:49
Hello Cannes-hungry movie fans.
In the next post of the French Film Month / Cannes film festival report, I'll review the first two days Cannes video reports from Filmklik.hu.
It will be a chaotic collection of thoughts, moments and quotes, so don't say I didn't warn you.
The first official moment could be the opening ceremony, where the host guy (Edouard Baer) starts the introduction in heavy accented English, mocking that certain big show in America seemingly with purpose. Then he switches to French and I fall in with some foreign celebrities who don't speak French. Cate Blanchet here... Julian Moore.... Gael Garcia Bernal...
It must be something very important. Soon the Jury is introduced. Thanks to www.payvand.com, here's the complete list:
JURY: Official Selection
President Sean Penn
Sergio Castellitto,
Natalie Portman,
Rachid Bouchareb,
Alfonso Cuaron,
Alexandra Maria Lara,
Apichatpong Weerasethakul,
Marjane Satrapi,
Jeanne Balibar
Sean Penn is very serious... his voice judders at few points. Emotion, or some substance? Nevertheless Natalie Portman looks on visibly worried at one point. Am I seeing things?
Next, in an interview session Penn seriously states, that "...when film really makes sense, it's when it's sharing a revolution that's going on in a broader world outside of film..."
A short Photo Call with actors and filmmakers, and lots of shouting photo journalists.. "Juliaaa... look 'ere!! Danny Gloveeer..." and so on, not much here but a few smiles, and yes, one thing: it's an EVENT when Julianne Moore takes off her huge sunglasses for a selected group of photographers.
A red carpet walk for Leonera, with Rodrigo Santoro, you know the ambiguous oriented Xerxes from 300...
Another walk with the Jury. Man, Sean Penn looks out of place! Almost uncomfortable, hands in pocket, serious and uncertain face at the same time. I guess he never was a simple and balanced guy...
The videos end abruptly by the way, very rough editing work.
I have to check out Blindness... Julianne Moore, Danny Glover, Gael Garcia Bernal in one movie? Really have to check out what's it about...
That's it as of today, more will be up I guess. Overall there is a day delay, so far nothing too exciting, Sean Penn looks uncomfortable, and Danny Glover has the most natural smile of all. Oh yeah, and the videos do feel rough, it's like you turn on a feed without commentary on TV, and at almost random points you switch channels, odd.
Next time I'll come with a few more movies from the French Film Month, probably a Fargo-esque thriller, so stay tuned.
