Monsters vs Aliens

Another 3d stereo movie up ahead (opens on the 2nd of April)! Monsters vs Aliens or simply MvA is Dreamworks Animation's first film that was intended to be 3D from the start, or at least it was conceived before a single storyboard was drawn. Probably it's the first time for a major animated feature to utilize the possibilities of stereo right from the start, and not just using it in post production.
The result is convincing: a good, although a bit silly family fun in clever 3D, another nice experience after the recent Coraline. Although opinions tend to differ, it's probably not far fetched to say that Coraline as a movie is still better, and definitely more imaginative. MvA is decent though and much more consumable for the wide audience, with a story mocking the alien invasion and monster movies at the same time. Some of the story elements are a bit pre-canned, but the younger audience won't notice this, and will be entertained throughout the full 90 minutes or so.
Our central character is Susan Murphy aka Ginormica when she becomes the 50 foot tall woman after getting nogged on the head by a misterious meteorite from outer space. And all this happens on her wedding day. Not so lucky! She's quickly captured by military forces and is taken to a top secret and undisclosed military base, where she meets other "Monsters" ranging from the 350 foot tall Insectosaur to BOB a brainless but loveably silly gelatinous mass. It turns out that the strange meteor was a rock with highly valuable powers, and a megalomaniac alien named Gallaxhar sets all four of his (its?) eyes upon it. And while he's at Earth looking for those powers, why not conquer the planet? The result is a fun packed monsters vs aliens battle-ride, when our odd heroes are thrown into the fray. The title is a give-away, I know.
The best thing about MvA, is that you can see the future: the 3D material is forming into decent shapes. Stereo movies are moving away from being gimmicky shells towards quality pictures. They're not quite there yet all the time, but more and more animation and live action flicks are pouring into the huge stereospace that's just waiting for quality to fill up all it's dimensions.
