Shrek at last!(?)

Shrek forever after, in trendy 3D, might be the last occasion we see the big green ogre and his loudmouth donkey friend on the big screen. I hope at least...
What's for sure is that the series never really lived up to the original one, ever diminishing from one through the third, and this fourth time it's only a slight recurve. The original being a milestone and gem of cartoon comedy, this is not the largest shame in the World.
The, so it seems, final episode of the series has a nice twist of storytelling in it, dealing with alternate realities and time paradoxes, even if it feels like a slightly desperate move to jank the Big Green out of dullness that the third act steered him into. The result is a moderately entertaining family comedy, with much less edge than the original one, but has still some glimpses of it's old self. All the familiar characters are back, and just as with the story, they seem to have got the reboot treatment, that's so popular these days.
Luckily the filmmakers don't really leave it open in the end, so the adventures of Shrek might end at last, and we all can release a sigh: "Let's leave it at there..." and we really should. We can always cherish the memory of the small brilliance simply known as Shrek.
